Joe Weise
When Joe Weise decided to purchase The Laundry Room of Ely, a coin-operated and commercial laundry business, he wasn’t just investing in a recession-proof business but stepping into a community necessity. Located in a region frequented by second-home owners, resorts, and lodges, the company serves two distinct clientele: individuals needing a dependable laundromat and businesses requiring seamless commercial laundry services.
On the coin-operated side, customers enjoy a clean and efficient experience that fits their needs, especially those with limited water or septic access at their seasonal properties. On the commercial side, resorts and lodging businesses benefit from a well-organized pick-up and drop-off laundry service with a streamlined system for convenient deliveries. With seven employees and a considerable market share in the area’s resort laundry sector, the business has doubled its commercial side operations in just six months.
I have no idea what I would have done with the financials without Northland SBDC’s help.

The journey of purchasing The Laundry Room began when a friend informed Joe about the business opportunity. For Joe, owning the building and the business meant freedom, control, and motivation. “When it’s your thing, and your name’s attached, it’s pretty great.”
However, navigating the financial side of the business acquisition was no small feat. That’s where Katherine Lahti from Northland SBDC came in. She helped Joe create a strong foundation for success, and her expertise in financials and projections proved invaluable.
“Katherine took the previous financials and turned them into usable information and projections for the bank. Without her help, there would have been a major roadblock to completing the purchase. She couldn’t have been more helpful. Katherine helped me prepare and package my request for financing for the lender” says Joe.
According to Katherine, “Joe recognized the importance of The Laundry Room of Ely as an essential business in his community, and has worked hard to create a clean and friendly environment. He also emphasizes sustainability by utilizing eco-friendly solar water heating.”
As the proud owner of a thriving laundry business, Joe is focused on growth. “The fun part of a business is building it, watching it work, and receiving good feedback from customers,” Joe shared.
Joe is excited for the future with plans to expand their customer base and explore innovative ideas. Thanks to his vision, dedication, and the support of Northland SBDC, the future looks bright for this essential local business.
