Étoile du Nord Day Spa
When Ely native Kate Kalan opened Étoile du Nord Day Spa on Earth Day 2025, she set out to bring something fresh, healthy, and meaningful to her hometown—a place where relaxation, beauty, and sustainability meet. The name, Étoile du Nord (French for “Star of the North”), reflects both Minnesota pride and the spa’s guiding philosophy: self-care that feels good and is good for you.
The spa offers manicures, pedicures, Gel-X extensions, hair tinsel, and signature Étoile Glow Facials, all using low-tox, cruelty-free products. It also houses Bear Naked Healing, which offers energy healing and other services, including sound bowls and chakra balancing, creating a holistic wellness destination in the heart of Ely.

Kate’s inspiration came from her parents, Louie and Flossie, longtime Ely business owners who taught her the value of community and service. After years of working in media in the Twin Cities, Kate returned home during the pandemic to create a cozy, uplifting space where people could relax and recharge close to home.
“It’s seeing how happy people are when they walk in and out the door,” Kate shared. “We get to help people relax, feel beautiful, and take a little ‘me-time’—all while keeping things low-tox, cruelty-free, and kind to the planet.”
Starting a business from scratch wasn’t easy, but Northland SBDC provided guidance every step of the way. Katherine Lahti helped refine her business plan, Rovena Claxton advised on hiring, and Becki Oja supported her through QuickBooks setup and management.

As the spa grows, Kate is focused on keeping the energy alive year-round after a busy summer filled with local and visiting customers. With her passion, creativity, and the support of Northland SBDC, Étoile du Nord truly lives up to its name—Ely’s own Star of the North.
